Standard sheet vinyl has no or few seams

Standard vinyl is an inexpensive flooring material that is popular for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Sheets are cut from rolls for each project. A sheet is cut to size for a small room while a larger room takes two or more sheets that are seamlessly pieced together. Carpet Barn is a vinyl retailer that has many rolls of vinyl flooring in our Spokane and Spokane Valley, Washington, showrooms as well as in our Carpet Barn Liquidation Center. The center is the perfect place to find specially priced top quality brands.

Flooring facts

Standard vinyl flooring mimics flooring that is made from natural materials. Hardwood plank designs imitate numerous wood species that come in a range of colors and styles. Tile designs look like stones such as slate and marble. A ceramic tile look is also popular. Homeowners who favor modern decor sometimes choose a black and white checkerboard or geometric pattern. Sheet vinyl has a PVC core that is bonded to fiberglass or felt backing layer. This core is topped with a design layer that is protected by a clear wear layer. The flooring does a good job of resisting water and spills since it is hard for liquids to penetrate a single solid surface.

Installation and more

The entire sheet of vinyl can be glued to the subfloor or the sheet can be glued around the perimeter only. Loose lay installation is best for some applications. Modified loose lay vinyl is kept in place in heavy traffic areas with double-sided tape. The flooring can be installed over some existing floors. Also, plywood can be used as an underlayment. The surface should be sanded until it is smooth and level since vinyl sheets are so thin that imperfections will show through. Typical standard vinyl flooring lasts 5 to 10 years while the best brands last 25 years or more. The durability of the floor is determined by the thickness of the sheet and the wear layer.
